Dental Checkups & Cleanings for Kids

Depending on the age of your child, a general checkup and teeth cleaning might look similar to an adult’s. Using more appropriate dental instruments for smaller mouths, we take the time to teach and explain the process while checking for cavities, gum disease, and even bite misalignment. We also clear away any accumulated plaque to leave teeth looking and feeling better than before. If a personalized treatment plan is required, we will go over the details with you and your child before you leave.

Dental Sealants

Until a child reaches the age of 8, they need someone to observe their brushing habits. Because the back teeth can often be the hardest to reach for little hands, dental sealants can be highly effective in safeguarding these molars and premolars. With chewing surfaces that have pits and grooves, sealants are applied, serving as a barrier against bacteria and food particles that can become easily trapped. With great care, sealants can remain in place for up to 10 years but will be checked at each appointment.

Silver Diamine Fluoride

Cavities are a common occurrence among young smiles, so when they happen, it’s important that dentists have a solution that can readily address the problem. For children who are not yet ready for tooth-colored fillings, we can apply silver diamine fluoride (SDF). This mixture is applied to the cavity, allowing the silver to kill the bacteria, while the fluoride stops the spread and prevents further decay. It’s a completely painless process that will keep your child’s smile better protected until it’s time for a filling.

Frenectomies (Lip & Tongue-Tie Treatment)

Often identified during infancy, TOTs (Tethered Oral Tissues) as they are known are found behind the upper lip or underneath the tongue and can restrict oral mobility, causing problems with nursing, speech, and even breathing depending on the age of your child. At Downtown Dental, we perform frenectomies to release these tissues and encourage better tongue and/or lip movement so that children of all ages can move through life with greater ease.

Pulp Treatment

Children who complain of severe tooth pain may be experiencing a serious infection that has spread deep beneath the enamel layer. Once it reaches the pulp, which houses the tooth’s nerve system, it can cause immense discomfort. To alleviate any pain and save your child’s tooth from extraction, we can perform pulp treatment, which is the removal of the affected pulp and any diseased tissues. This process not only takes away the pain a child might experience but also allows them to keep their natural tooth longer.
