What Are Implant Dentures?

Similar to traditional ones, implant dentures are designed to replace some or even all of your missing teeth. However, instead of relying on your gum line, these prosthetics will be fitted atop dental implants that have been embedded into the jawbone. Due to the biocompatibility of the titanium posts, they can effectively serve as your new tooth roots, allowing your tooth replacements to last decades to even a lifetime with proper care.

Fixed/Permanent Implant Dentures

Fixed implant dentures are meant to be fitted to your dental implants indefinitely and won’t be able to be removed by anyone other than your dentist. For this reason, most patients can expect their prosthetics to remain in place and function like natural teeth for many years. You can also maintain them with regular oral hygiene and routine dental checkups like you would with real pearly whites.

Removable Implant Dentures

Also known as Snap-On dentures or overdentures, removable implant dentures will be capable of being removed whenever you want without needing help from your dentist. In most cases, this option can be used for patients who have fewer dental implants and have experienced jawbone deterioration.

The Implant Denture Process

You’ll first undergo an initial consultation where you’ll discuss your current oral health, your smile goals, and whether implant dentures are a viable option for you. We might have to perform preliminary services to ensure you’re free of any complications, such as gum disease treatment or even tooth extractions. Once you’re ready for the process, we’ll begin with placing your dental implants in the jawbone.

After we’ve successfully embedded your metal posts in their proper positions, you’ll need to wait for your posts to undergo osseointegration so that they can completely fuse with your bone tissue. This healing period can take three to six months to finish. Once it’s done, you’ll receive metal abutments that will link your prosthetics to your implants. Afterward, we’ll fit your implant denture in place to complete your smile!

Am I a Candidate for Implant Dentures?

Those who are missing a moderate to significant amount of teeth might be eligible for this treatment. We will need to ensure you don’t have any existing underlying oral health issues and that you’ll be committed to maintaining great oral hygiene. You should also have adequate jawbone density so that your implants can be properly supported. Once we’ve verified that your oral health and jawbone volume are sufficient, we can begin discussing your potential treatment plan.
